After months of feverish anticipation and preparation it's time for the final details of our long journey into Mexico, a large country with much to offer to travelers willing to discover its true wonders.
After the first week in the magnificent Chiapas, the second part of our expedition traveling has developed in the Yucatan Peninsula, a land where the jungle meets the crystal clear Caribbean Sea, in a mixture of history and modernity.
Here are some notes, stories and travel tips.

TULUM
A first important tip: keep away from Cancun, because it's much more like a Las Vegas resort that is not a real Mexican town. As a basis for movement is much better instead of Playa del Carmen (absolutely the best hotel Barrio Latino), well connected to the airport in Cancun and all the other tourist destinations of the Riviera Maya.
Whoever steps in these parts can not visit the archaeological site of Tulum, the only Mayan settlement that stands on the beach instead of in the heart of the jungle.

Before leaving the ruins of Tulum (or even before you enter) see if the square is in progress at the "Dance of the Voladores": This is an ancient ritual in which 4 "flying men" is launched from a rotating pole and a fifth is sitting at 20 m height by playing a flute. For transport there is nothing easier: instead of expensive taxis, for only 35 pesos (2 €) you can walk with the Collective (a minivan), the stretch-Tulum Playa ... The only danger is that the air conditioning in some vehicles is kept to a polar

CENOTE
The limestone karst and the Riviera Maya makes a few tens of kilometers are Cenote, the large cavities more or less circular rock-cut and filled with fresh water. In some cases these "craters" are partially or completely underground, making possible the incredible diving in caves and cave systems.

Reaching it was a bit tiring, not because of the collectivo from Playa (the cost is negligible, as always, but makes only stop on the main coastal road) and for the 2 km road to go inland in this area very lush. The landscape unfolds before us is very much similar to what we usually see during our output rather than caving during a dive, but the best the journey is just discovering new things never seen it!

We were still sighted, and with two bright torches fronts over the mask set we enter the "bat-cave", a large cave only partially flooded home to a large colony of bats ... but this is very similar to our caves.

Akumal YALKU
clear sea and beaches soups out there, but following different advice, we visited the lagoon / Nature Reserve Yalku. Unfortunately it seems that the only way to get there is through the seaside town of Akumal and then back north for about 2 km ... way to go in feet is very little, but during the warm way they meet many colorful animals ...

A peculiarity of this area is for the presence of sea turtles (nesting in Akumal) and many crabs, so much so that the footprints of the latter stand out clearly on the white sand.

The best is yet to come, and just arrived at the reserve we are struck by how well maintained, much like a botanical garden rather than a nature reserve.

Yucatan, the first part of our expedition touring has grown in Chiapas, an area where very little urbanized nature and the jungle are still the masters.
Here are some notes, stories and travel tips ...

MEXICO ON THE ROAD: DRIVING IN CHIAPAS Just
because they are aware of having to drive for about 800 km we decided to rent a car rather than a mid-class supermini tiny, but despite this travel in Chiapas (9 hours from Villahermosa to 5 hours from San Cristobal and Palenque to San Cristobal ) were very ... adventurous.

What is most striking is a European rider, however, is the state of roads and vehicles in general. Another distinctive feature of Chiapas are the vehicles: in addition to the good old Beetle, still very present here in all models and colors available, many running jalopy that probably did not perform a review of the last century ...

They meet often, then , the daily vans carrying workers from small towns, often consisting of a cluster of small houses and huts,

to places of work: since all have their own machete, we assume that it is collectors bananas or other plants. However, these are strategic vans filled with people both inside and outside

definitely makes an impression to see people quietly "suspended" while the vehicles whizzing on these winding roads.
Speaking of these internal roads of Chiapas, then, can not be left out the "work in progress": there are often stretches of road where landslides or in maintenance, without much notice, one is left with only one lane in both directions running, maybe built on mud and rubble here and there with furrowed flooded craters ...

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS
This town is located in the middle of the mountains a few kilometers from Tuxtla Gutierrez, so it is certainly easier to reach by plane rather than drive from Villahermosa. It is located about 2,200 m above sea level and more than for its many churches

is well known both among the local populations in the few tourists because of its daily market: here you will meet farmers, artisans, farmers and shopkeepers to sell a bit 'of everything.

Fruit, vegetables, spices, hides, meat and clothes, all neatly displayed and supported without much logic (such as the cod cakes next to the bench is not exactly the best) ...

This market is about as far from our shopping centers you can imagine, but rather the impression of poverty and little cleaning that leaps to the eye is the feeling of union meetings and participation created by this very large market which has a huge catchment area.
If you want to buy something to remember the golden rule of Mexico is required to negotiate on the price!
In this town, finally, we can eat good Mexican food strictly by numbers really negligible: 5 / 6 € in two in the kitchen economic.

PALENQUE

Bonampak and Yaxchilan
Only in recent years have been made to visit these two Mayan sites located on the border with Guatemala: Their visit, organized by agencies of Palenque, is a pleasant adventure that lasts all day.

WATERFALL Misol-HA
last stop on our tour of Chiapas is the cascade of Misol-Ha, about 15 minutes from Palenque. In a green area much smaller than the Agua Azul, after a few steps from the parking lot you are in front of a roaring waterfall of 35 m:

The beauty of this mighty waterfall can be seen not only from the front, but also from the back passage and through a bagnatissimo trail behind the jet overcomes the waterfall until you reach a cave from which one side has a very impressive sight.
